Hunter Wellington Boots Now In!

At Simply Hike we’re excited to say that we are now stocking Hunter Wellies!

Just in time for this horrible weather we’re having, Hunter wellington boots have just arrived in our warehouse. You’ll find the perfect pair for the whole family, whether you want traditional, or funky.

The Mens Hunter Wellington boot range includes the Balmoral series; a group of working style wellies, designed for moderate to heavy use and that suit farm work as well as fishing and sports. The Balmoral Wellington boot collection are traditional in appearance and have some great features such as a charcoal fleece lining in the Bamboo carbon to absorb odour. The Balmoral Neoprene has been designed for its insulating properties, with a 3mm lining to keep feet toasty warm. Each of the Balmoral wellington boots are adjustable so will suit larger calf sizes.

The Womens Hunter Wellies range are unique. We have chosen the Hunter RHS Original TalL Wellington Boots which has been made in collaboration with The Royal Horticulture Society and would suit gardeners as well as festival goers. We're also featuring the Hunter Festival Tall Welly, a Limited Edition boot especially for summer festivals and the Hunter Melrose Tall which is a heeled wellington for ladies seeking a little more height and who don't 'do' flats, no matter what.

Hunter offers a more traditional, unisex wellington boot in some great colours. Check out the Hunter Original Tall and Hunter Original Short Wellies. We have taken the Hunter Hunter Original Adjustable too which is great for women and men who need a larger calf size. We are loving the Hunter Original Tall Gloss in Violet for women.

As well as adults Hunter boots, you will find a range of wellies for kids, great for those puddle splashing days! There’s the Hunter Original Kids Wellington Boots which look great in green, red, yellow and fuschia. As with the adult wellingtons, all the childrens styles have an orthopaedic fit, cushioned insole and have been made from Vulcanised natural rubber for strength and durability

Snugpak at Simply Hike

Snugpak

is a new brand here at Simply Hike which manufactures sleeping bags along with military inspired insulated clothing.

In our collection you will find a range of synthetic sleeping bags like their popular Softie Chrysalis sleeping bag range, with a bag for Summer, Winter and Expedition to more expensive bags like the Softie Technik range which is brand new for Autumn 2010.

The Elite sleeping bag series have a military look, and we have taken 3 season and 4 season bags from this range. The Elite range is very similar to the Chrysalis in that they have a zip baffle than can be extended out when it gets too hot, but tightened up again in the cold, ultimately regulating your temperature and boosting the performance of your sleeping bag.

The Travelpak Xtreme and Travelpak Lite are designed for 2 season camping or for exotic climates and great for backpacking or travel as they are extremely lightweight and compact. Both bags have antimicrobial properties to prevent odour and even incorporate a mosquito net which is pretty unique for a sleeping bag.

We have 2 styles of childrens sleeping bags, the Laponie Mummy and Laponie Square which are available in girly pink or boyish blue. Perfect for family camping trips or sleepovers.

Finally, Snugpak also offer a wide range of army look jackets and we have added the Sasquatch, which is an insulated jacket. This windproof jacket is like having a duvet wrapped round you, great for extreme conditions or pro-longed hours in the cold.

Multimat

Multimat has just arrived in our warehouse. They offer a large range of mats from family camping to adventure and expeditions. There’s foam mats which are really lightweight and also the inflatable mat version that we offer in singles, doubles and ones with pillows and some have 2 valves to provide a speedier deflation.

As well as Mats, MultiMat have a range of Kumfies which are seat pads to keep your bottom nice a warm and dry when you’re sitting on the ground. Securing bands for your mats are also available, these just keep your mat rolled up when it’s not in use for easy transportation.

Keen

Keen is a new footwear brand and includes walking boots, walking shoes and sandals for men and women. The Mens Newport Sandal and Womens Whisper Sandal are top sellers and have an extended rubber sole which rolls over the toe box to help prevent toes from getting scrapped and prolongs the sandals life. Both sandals are perfect for camping, walking, the beach and are waterproof so perfect for use in the sea and water. Both sandals are machine washable and include footbeds that mould to the users foot for a comfortable fit.

More traditionally we've added walking shoes such as the Mens Targhee II Walking Shoe and this is also available in a Womens version. The mid version of the Targhee II for women and men is also available for customers who require a little more support around their ankle.

… Berghaus for the Best Overall Hiking boot!

That’s right, the Berghaus Explorer Light hiking boot has been tried and tested by the people at Which? who gave the boot the highest score for best overall boot.

11 of the best selling boots were tested, including Scarpa’s Ranger and ZG65 XCR models along with models from Hi-Tec, Salomon, Karrimor, Meindl and Brasher.

Various lab tests were carried out on the boots by Which?, testing for breathability, shock absorption, grip, durability and waterproofness. This along with an experts view on the comfort of the boot which was carried out on a 36 mile hike over the rocky, muddy terrain of the Lake District gave them their final scores on each boot.

The Berghaus Explorer Light gained a score of 72% making the top spot, closely followed by the Hi-Tec V-Lite Altitude Ultra Luxe and Brasher Lithium GTX.

At the bottom of the table comes the two Scarpa models (which were two of the most expensive) and the Karrimor Penrith eVent.

The experts called the Explorer Light “a joy to wear” they loved the comfort and the grip offered from the boot and were surprised that even though it was incredibly lightweight it still gave fantastic support. The lab results confirmed it had good grip and that it had a better resistance to wearing down the sole than all the other boots.

Mountain Paws

The new Mountain Paws range is aimed at dog owners and helps you to care for animals whilst on camping trips and travelling away from home. The range has been designed in matching colours and includes various dog leads, collars, harnesses and toys with large and small options depending on how big your dog is.

A great product is the Dogs Dinner Food Bowl which means you can take their meal with you and then wash it out after use. The Stay! is also great for camping. Simply screw into a soft ground like grass and attach their lead meaning they can't stray off and cause havoc on the camp site. A great travel idea is the Hot Dog Water Bowl which can be folded up and stored neatly in your bag until needed.

Then, when your dog is thirsty fill with water like a normal dog bowl. This can then be empty and folded again after use. It's a great idea for summer when your dog gets thirsty on long walks. This is, of course the UK we're talking about so most of the time it will be raining. How about using the Mud Glove which is a dog towel with a difference; simply put on like an oven glove and give your dog a good rub down. This is great because it means you can hold your dog whilst drying so they don't run off and muddy the house.

A reader who was only taking hand-luggage on her trip didn’t want to compromise on the comfort of a pillow and asked Gill what travel pillow she would suggest taking.

What’s New?

You know the hiking and camping season is just around the corner when all the new stuff from the big brands start coming in. We have just taken deliveries from Berghaus, Coleman and Vango, with lots of new products for Spring/Summer 2010.

Berghaus

As well as a fantastic range of new Berghaus clothing, Berghaus have revamped a lot of their rucksack range this season. The older Freeflow IVs have been replaced with a mixture of Freeflow Pro's and updated Freeflow IV's.

The Berghaus Freeflow Pro Rucksacks have a new back system, designed for mountain use and built around a T6 aluminium frame allowing the pack to be more stable and fit closer to the body. The updated Berghaus Freeflow IV rucksacks still have the IV back system but now have a smaller mesh panel meaning there is more air gap to allow air to circulate, removing that clammy feeling that can sometimes occur. Some new colours have also been introduced this season, such as extreme blue and jet black to go with the revamped look.

Berghaus Jalan Rucksacks have been updated with new colours and many of the accessories such as dry pockets and tool case have also been updated to fit in with this new colour scheme.

The Berghaus Mule luggage range has been improved by going back to original capacities for a few seasons ago. These capacities were apparently more popular than last years and so have been reinstated along with some new colours.

Time For A New Hydration Pack?

Just in are these fabulous CamelBak Hydration Packs which offer you hands free drinking!

During the earlier days of Camelbak their products were very popular with mountain bikers and motocross riders because it meant that they could take their hands of the handlebars in order to drink.

Berghaus 3-In-1 Jackets

Berghaus do a fabulous range of 3-In-1 Jackets. The jacket consists of an outer shell and a fleece. It works as a great winter layering system because you can wear just the outer shell, or just the fleece on its own or you can wear them both together to keep extra warm and dry at the same time! They are available for both men in the Arctic Gemini and RG Jackets and for women in the Calisto jacket. These jackets really do offer you great value for money!

Also available is the Berghaus Shadow 4-In-1 Jacket for men which offers the same as the 3-In-1 Jackets but you can also turn the inner fleece inside out for another look.

If you have an iPhone and love camping and going to festivals then this is the app for you!

When you go camping or to a festival you can sometimes get lost when finding your tent right? Well I do, I always think I know exactly where it is, but when it comes to walking back in the dark it’s not always as easy as it seems. Well this app simply navigates you back to your tent (or to the beer tent or toilets if you want?).

Once you have set up your tent simply load up the app and add your location. Of course, this doesn’t just have to be the location of your tent, it could be the main stage or your friends tent. On your way back simply open the TentFinder app and hit FIND and you will be navigated back to your tent.

How great is that? Something we thought you guys might find very handy!

EU Ban Iodine For Disinfecting Water

For those of you who are unaware, The EU has announced that iodine will no longer be sold or supplied to use when disinfecting water after the 25th October this year. This will mean a big impact on all 27 countries in the European Union and, potentially can set world precedents regarding the safety when using chemical-based water treatment products.

People throughout the world have used iodine to disinfect drinking water for years, usually used by outdoor enthusiasts, military personnel, travellers, emergency respondents and disaster survivors. Iodine in drinking water has been considered safe when used for short periods of time with the correct dosage. However, the United States Centre for Disease Control advises against drinking iodinated water for more than a few weeks, Those allergic to iodine, with a history of thyroid disease and pregnant women shouldn’t consume iodinated water.

The new Seam Sealer from Gelert is an essential bit of Kit for any camping trip, especially if your tent hasn’t been used for a few seasons. The seam sealer is a waterproof sealant which can be used on clothing, tents and rucksacks. It is designed to stop water seeping through the seals of tents, rucksacks and so forth. Even if you have a new tent which isn’t factory seam sealed, this is very handy to provide that extra protection!

If you haven’t checked your tent before your trip and find that there is a bigger problem such as a hole, then the Seam Sealer repair Kit is what you need. Jetboil Product Recall

Earlier this year, Jetboil introduced a new style of gas valve in the production of the Personal Cooking System (PCS) and Group Cooking System (GCS)
Jetboil has received a limited number of reports that products with this new style valve have leaked gas between the valve and the fuel canister, creating possible ignition. No personal injury or property damage has been reported to date relating to this issue.
Please note, the Personal Cooking Systems and Group Cooking Systems utilising the old style valve are unaffected and you may continue to use your stove featuring this valve.

MYO headlamps from Petzl - Safety Alert

Petzl have released a safety alert on their headtorches. Essentially the units mentioned below should not be used with rechargeable batteries as it may cause the unit to malfunction and may harm a wearer.

Hazard: If the headlamp is used with rechargeable batteries, the cable connecting the battery pack to the lamp can spark, melt, or catch fire. This poses a burn hazard to consumers.

Pegs or Pins?

When you buy a tent the manufacturer conveniently includes tent pegs to stake down your new investment. The problem arises when you try to insert these into anything tougher than jelly! Having tried many new tents over the past couple of years of varying qualities I am yet to discover a supplied peg that does not bend with the slightest encouragement. I think it is fair to assume that on budget tents you are not going to be supplied the strongest pegs in the world, but having also pitched tents getting close to a thousand pounds retail I can assure you the pegs do not get any better. To be fair on the more expensive tents they include v profile steel pegs as well as thicker pin pegs but here is the news – bigger tents need more securing thus bigger pegs so although stronger than economy editions still don’t make the grade.

Do yourself a favour before your next trip buy some nail like pegs and a mallet. Using your boot only encourages (as if they need any) bending. Try something like the High Visibility Steel Tough Peg in hard ground or the Ground Anchor Peg for soft ground

Polycotton Tents

Having just spent two weeks with the family in northern France in a new Vango Zanzibar 800 polycotton tent I feel like an authority on polycotton’s advantages.

Let’s start by saying it is in own right the Zanzibar is a cavernous tent, sleeping up to 8 which it did on the first night during a torrential downpour (well it would not be camping otherwise).

The main advantage from a practical point of view is unlike polyester tents, condensation is virtually eliminated especially whilst sleeping. You wake up feeling fresh not the normal clammy sensation, and if proof was needed the air beds which normally in a polyester tent show moisture on them were bone dry.

Poly cotton tents are generally recommended for warmer climates, however the weather system frequenting our location gave us pretty much all conditions, blistering sunshine to rainstorms and gales of near biblical proportions! Even in heavy driving rain the poly-cotton held up not allowing any water through.

There is one draw back though, the material is considerably heavier, I would estimate it to be three times the weight of a polyester equivalent. On smaller tents this would not be a problem, however on an 8 man tent, should a forklift truck not be readily available you will need some assistance – on our tent the manufacturer included a great DVD showing two people erecting the tent (well you don’t actually see it going up with the two people thanks to some clever editing).

Polycotton may be more expensive but it should last considerably longer than a traditional polyester tent, which is good for the environment and in the long run your wallet.

Would I buy another? Without a doubt, once you have had a polycotton tent you won’t go back..

How To Avoid Blisters When Hiking

You would be incorrect to assume that blisters are inevitable when hiking. If the right precautions are taken they are actually relatively easy avoid.

Boots, Shoes and Hiking socks.

These are the most likely cause of blisters when out hiking if not correctly chosen. Your choice of footwear is the most important choice you will make in hiking as its your feet that do all the work. Ensure that when you try them on they are comfy (even before being broken in), if they are not comfy when you first try them they certainly wont be comfy after a few hours on the trail. You should wear nice thick hiking socks, these will allow your feet to breathe and avoid blisters. Thick socks are important for a couple of reasons.

They provide extra padding for your feet
They reduce the friction between your feet and the boots themselves
They wick away the sweat

And it's all three factors here that are crucial when it comes to the prevention of blisters.

Breaking In Your Boots

When you've got your perfect hiking boots don't assume you can go walking in them right away. They will require breaking in. Wear them each day for an hour or so for a week at first, this will ensure they are a bit more supple for when you get hiking. They will begin molding to your feet and becoming more comfortable.

Keep Your Feet Dry!

When hiking your feet will sweat - simple as that. Its this sweat partly that causes blisters. When breaking make sure you remove your boots and give your feet some air and a chance to dry out, this will minimise your risk of blisters even further.

Stop & Check.

Before getting a blister you will almost certainly feel some irritation. Stop and check your feet, it might be that you have taken on a small bit of grit.

Common sense always prevails, just stop and check.

I have been reading into how everything that we do can have an environmental impact in the hope to make mine smaller, it occurred to me that even hikers could also contaminate the environment through the things they dispose. Hikers are in close contact with nature and wild animals.

It is important then that they learn to study the habits of other creatures, especially during the mating season so that they can enjoy viewing them in a safe manner.

Here are some ideas for eco camping this summer:

Keep wood fires to a minimum.
Dispose of all rubish carefully.
Minimize your supplies, only take what you need.
Keep group sizes small, less people the better.
Use biodegradable soaps and shampoos for washing

Can Camping Be Cool?

Gone are the days of naffy tents and dismal toilet blocks. Camping nowadays is much more refined, luxury experience than it used to be (or in some cases slightly odd).

A new style of camping is bringing back an old British summer tradition.

Here are what I would call the extremes of camping today.

Luxury Tents:

Is camping all about being self sufficient? Well not necessarily. Whitepod offer camping with a twist. Camping Pods

The fun of camping is that you can just pack up your things and go. With a camper van (VW or not) you can do this with slightly more comfort than you could normally. If your sitting there thinking 'I don't own a VW' but you fancy a go then check out snailtrail and you can hire one.
